Carved into a rock face, Dambulla’s five cave shrines shelter centuries-old Buddhist statues and painted murals within a UNESCO-listed complex still very much alive with active worship. Golden Buddha figures and vivid, intricate ceiling art together make it one of the island’s most atmospheric, deeply revered sacred sites. Best visited year-round, any time of day.
